When Dorian woke the next morning, he was a little surprised to find he wasn’t alone in bed. Ray was still right there with him—curled up into a little ball at his side for warmth.

God, she had always slept like this when they’d been together. Like she was defenseless and needed someone to protect her. Nothing could be further from the truth.

But also . . . nothing could be closer to the truth.

Seeing her last night with his friends—his family—he knew there was nothing he wanted more than to fold her into his life.

Secrets be damned.

Yeah, she had them, but he was going to have to accept that she might never be willing or able to share them with him. If she could accept that his mind was broken, that there might be times where he wouldn’t be able to sleep in this bed next to her because he couldn’t stand to have anything or anyone touching him, that he may be frozen in terror from the past . . .

Then he could damn well accept that she had some things she wasn’t prepared to share.

He pulled her closer, smiling as she unwound her naked body and stretched, lying half on top of him, her head on his chest. He pulled her closer and kissed her hair.

“You’re warm,” she muttered.

“Your own personal heating service any time you want it.”

She rubbed her foot up and down his leg. “I’ll take it.”

He slid his hand down her naked back, squeezing her waist. “If you keep that up, you’ll be taking a lot more.”

She chuckled, the sound fading off as she traced a scar—his most recent one, from her—on his waist.

“You must have so many questions about me,” she whispered.

“I won’t lie. I do. But you’re not ready to give me the answers right now, and it’s okay. It’s not a deal breaker for me, Sunray.”

“I-I want to tell you. But it’s not pretty.”

He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. “Then I want to hear. The past is the past—we’re only going to worry about the future.”

She was silent for so long, he thought maybe she’d changed her mind about talking. He wasn’t going to push it.

“You saved me that day in Kabul. You got captured and were tortured and nearly died because I distracted you.”

“Grace . . .” Her name slipped out before he could stop it. “I wouldn’t change that. You’re alive. And the thought of you being captured . . .”

Jesus. Her being captured, being held in that prison? It would’ve broken him in every way. There was no way he would’ve recovered.

“I would be tortured a thousand times before I would have let them take you,” he continued.

She rubbed a hand along his stomach, which had tensed at the thought. “I know you would. You saved me that day. It—it’s a factor in what I need to tell you now, about the choices I made after Kabul.”

That shut him up. He stroked her back instead.

“Like you know, I came to Kabul to tell you what I suspected about Project Crypt.
